Il mio progetto Film People nasce nel febbraio del 2019. Si tratta di una serie di ritratti dove ogni persona è associata al titolo del suo film preferito, quello che si può considerare il suo film della vita. Visto che spesso le persone ritratte (e non solo) mi fanno giustamente molte domande a proposito di questo progetto, ho deciso di raccogliere le domande in questa pagina per soddisfare pienamente la vostra curiosità.
My Film People Project was born in February 2019. It’s a series of portraits where each person is photographed with the title of his/her favorite film, or what he/she consider the film of his/her heart. Since often the people portrayed (and not only) ask me many questions about this project, I decided to collect the questions on this page to fully satisfy your curiosity.

Perché hai deciso di fare questo progetto?
Ci sono tante influenze che sono poi confluite in questo progetto. Innanzitutto ho studiato cinema, che è forse la mia più grande passione, e mi piaceva l’idea di unire due cose che amo moltissimo, ovvero i film e la fotografia. Questa è stata sicuramente la scintilla. Poi, influenzato anche dal bellissimo progetto Humans of New York, ho pensato che sarebbe stato interessante scoprire, attraverso la scelta del film della vita, le storie che c’erano dietro tale scelta, perché una persona decide di scrivere il titolo di un film piuttosto che un altro. Ritengo che la scelta del film preferito possa svelare molto della persona ritratta: un angolo intimo della sua persona, in qualche modo un pezzetto della sua anima, mi piaceva dunque questa idea di scoprire quale film ci fosse dietro le persone che incontro. Normalmente mi occupo di fotografia urbana e di street photography, ma sono sempre stato affascinato dal ritratto ambientato, un genere fotografico che avevo moltissima voglia di sperimentare: in più sono una persona abbastanza timida e sapevo che questo progetto sarebbe stato per me anche una sfida con me stesso, per migliorare un aspetto di me che, con il lavoro che faccio, ho decisamente bisogno di sviluppare.
Why did you choose to do this project?
There are so many influences that have then flowed into this project. First of all, I studied cinema, which is perhaps my greatest passion, and I liked the idea of ​​combining two things that I love very much: cinema and photography. This was definitely the spark. Then, also influenced by the beautiful Humans of New York project, I thought it would be interesting to discover, through the choice of the favorite film, the stories behind this choice, why a person wrote the title of a film rather than another. I believe that the choice of the favorite film can reveal a lot about the person portrayed: an intimate corner of his person, somehow a piece of his soul, so I liked this idea of ​​discovering which film was behind the people I meet. Normally I realize urban photography and street photography, but I have always been fascinated by portraits, a photographic genre that I really desired to experiment: I am quite a shy person and I knew that this project would also be a challenge for me with myself, to improve an aspect of me that, with the work I do, I definitely need to develop.

Cosa ci farai con le foto?
Domanda da un milione di dollari. Onestamente non lo so, ho qualche idea ma non ho un vero e proprio obiettivo finale. Ho delle ambizioni, ovviamente, come una grande mostra con oltre 100 immagini (magari in un Festival di Cinema) oppure un libro fotografico. Mi piacerebbe riuscire a rendere questa serie virale, anche se è un termine che non amo molto, ma sarebbe bello raggiungere tante persone e riuscire a fotografare centinaia di individui differenti. Per fortuna il grosso del mio lavoro è sui miei progetti Urban Melodies e Raindrop Blues (che trovate sul mio sito), quindi posso dedicarmi a Film People senza alcuna fretta o ansia particolare e questa è una cosa che sto apprezzando molto.
What will you do with these photos?
Million dollar question. I honestly don’t know, I have some ideas but I don’t have a real goal. I have ambitions, of course, like a large exhibition with over 100 images (perhaps in a Film Festival) or a photo book. I would like to be able to make this series viral, even if it is a word that I don’t like very much, but it would be nice to reach many people and be able to photograph hundreds of different individuals. Luckily the bulk of my work is on my Urban Melodies and Raindrop Blues projects (which you can find on my website), so I can work on Film People without any particular rush or anxiety and this is something I am really appreciating.

Quando finirà il progetto?
Non c’è una data di scadenza, se così si può dire. Come ho detto mi ci sto dedicando senza fretta né ansia e per questo mi sto divertendo molto: ho intenzione di portare avanti Film People ancora per molti anni, finché non mi annoio o finché non mi riterrò pienamente soddisfatto. Il mio obiettivo, seppur molto difficile, è di arrivare almeno a 1000 ritratti.
When will the project end?
There is no expiration date. As I said before I’m working on it without haste or anxiety and for this reason I am having a lot of fun: I’d like to carry on Film People for many more years, until I am bored or until I am fully satisfied. My goal, although very difficult, is to get at least 1000 portraits.

Perché hai aperto un profilo Instagram solo per questo progetto invece di usare il profilo già esistente?
Per lavoro mi occupo di fotografia totalmente differente e non volevo creare confusione tra i progetti che porto avanti per lavoro con questo che porto avanti per pura passione (anche se grazie ad esso mi sto procurando moltissimi nuovi contatti). Ho deciso dunque di aprire un sito su wordpress per mostrare tutte le foto realizzate e un profilo Instagram che, pur dovendo partire da zero, potesse generare un tipo di pubblico differente da quello che mi segue normalmente e che soprattutto potesse mostrare tutte le immagini senza alcuna confusione con i miei altri progetti.
Why did you open an Instagram profile just for this project instead of using the existing profile?
My work is about a different kind of photography and I didn’t want to create confusion between the projects that I carry on for work with this one that I carry out for pure passion (even if thanks to it I’m getting many new contacts). I therefore decided to open a site on wordpress to show all the photos taken and an Instagram profile that, although having to start from scratch, could generate a different type of followers from the the people that usually follows me and that, above all, could show all the images without any confusion with my other projects.

Ho moltissimi film preferiti, in base a cosa devo scegliere?
Questa è stata una domanda piuttosto comune tra le persone che ho fotografato! La cosa più semplice che posso dirvi è: insieme al titolo di quale film vorreste fotografarvi? Si tratta di scegliere il film della vostra vita, quello che più vi rappresenta, che vi fa sentire a casa, che vi emoziona, che vi ha dato di più o che magari vi ha cambiato la vita. So che è una scelta particolarmente difficile per alcuni, ma cercate di pensare a quale film vi sentite davvero più legati.
I have a lot of favorite movies, how do I choose?
This was a pretty common question among the people I photographed! The simplest thing I can tell you is: with the title of which film would you like to be photographed? It’s about choosing the film of your life, the one that best represents you, that makes you feel at home, that excites you, that gave you more emotions or maybe changed your life. I know it’s a particularly difficult choice for some of you, but try to think about which movie you really feel most connected to.

Come fai per i diritti? Fai firmare una liberatoria?
Non ne ho avuto bisogno, nel momento in cui una persona accetta di scrivere il titolo di un film su una lavagna e di farsi fotografare accetta implicitamente di essere fotografata. Quando invece ho esposto una selezione del progetto durante il Roma Tre Film Festival al Palladium ho contattato via mail i diretti interessati per chiedere il permesso di esporre le loro foto.
How do you go about the rights? Do you have a release to sign?
I didn’t need it, when a person agrees to write the title of a film on a blackboard and to be photographed with it, he/she implicitly accepts to be photographed. When, on the other hand, I exhibited a selection of the project during the Roma Tre Film Festival at the Palladium Theatre, I contacted the interested parties via email to ask for permission to exhibit their photos.

Non so cosa scrivere per spiegare la mia scelta, posso fare soltanto la foto?
Ma si tratta soltanto di fare una foto, non dovete scrivere nulla, a quello ci penso io. Quando ci incontriamo, appena scrivete il titolo sulla lavagna, vi domando perché avete scelto proprio questo film e voi mi spiegate in poche parole (o tante, fate voi) il motivo che vi ha spinto a scegliere un film piuttosto che un altro. Si tratta di una semplice e brevissima chiacchierata, non dovete scrivere nulla se non il titolo del film sulla lavagna.
I don’t know what to write to explain my choice, can I only be photographed?
But it’s just a matter of taking a picture, you don’t have to write anything, I’ll take care of that. When we meet, as soon as you write the title on the blackboard, I ask you why you chose this film and you just explain to me in a few words (or many, it’s up to you) the reason that prompted you to choose a film rather than another. This is a simple and very short chat with me, you don’t have to write anything except the title of the film on the board.

Posso partecipare anche io? Come faccio?
Certo che sì! Se vivi a Roma o ti trovi a passare da qui e hai un attimo di tempo puoi registrarti al form presente in questa pagina: Film People. Ti ruberò soltanto 10 minuti, al massimo. Il form mi serve soltanto per poter organizzare meglio i vari “appuntamenti”, per conoscere il vostro giorno di preferenza per la foto e la zona per voi più comoda.
Can I participate? How?
Of course yes! If you live in Rome or you pass for here and you have a moment of time, you can register on the form on this page: Film People. I’ll only steal you 10 minutes, at most. I need the form only to be able to better organize the various “appointments”, to know your favorite day for the photo and the most easy place for meeting.

Fai le foto soltanto a Roma o anche in altre città? Il progetto riguarda solo gli italiani?
Sì, vivo a Roma e quindi il grosso del progetto è realizzato qui (anche se sono riuscito a fare alcune foto anche a Monopoli, in Puglia, durante le vacanze estive). In futuro sarebbe bello portare la lavagna anche in qualche altra parte d’Italia e del mondo, ma non è una cosa che farò nell’immediato. Ovviamente il progetto è aperto a tutti e a tutte, indipendentemente dalla provenienza, infatti tra le persone ritratte figurano, ad esempio, anche una ragazza portoghese, un ragazzo argentino e un ragazzo tedesco.
Do you take photos only in Rome or in other cities as well? Does the project concern only Italians?
Yes, I live in Rome and therefore the bulk of the project is here (although every summer I move to Monopoli, Apulia, for summer holidays, so I can take photos there, as well). In the future it would be nice to take the blackboard to some other part of Italy and around the world, but that’s not something I will do soon. Obviously the project is open to everyone, regardless of origin, among the people portrayed, for example, there are also a Portuguese girl, an Argentine boy, a German boy.

Si può scegliere un film che è stato già scelto da altri?
Certamente, anzi, mi incuriosisce molto vedere quali persone hanno scelto lo stesso film, magari per motivi completamente diversi. Trovo interessante vedere come due persone che non si conoscono e che magari non hanno quasi niente in comune, condividano la passione per lo stesso film.
Is it possible to choose a film that has already been chosen by others?
Certainly, indeed, it intrigues me a lot to see which people chose the same film, sometimes for completely different reasons. I find it interesting to see how two people who don’t know each other and who may have almost nothing in common share a passion for the same film.

Quale film è stato scelto più volte?
Fino ad ora ci sono alcuni film che sono stati scelti più volte, puoi controllare la classifica! Devo dire che grazie a questo progetto sto scoprendo alcuni titoli che non avevo mai visto e che, piano piano, sto recuperando: non me l’aspettavo, ma Film People si sta rivelando anche un ottimo mezzo per diffondere la cultura cinematografica.
Which film has been chosen more times?
So far there are some films that have been chosen several times, you can check the charts! Thanks to this project I’m discovering some movies that I had never watched but, slowly, I am making up: I didn’t expect it, but Film People is also proving to be an excellent means of spreading film culture.

Perché hai scelto di chiamare il progetto Film People?
Sono sempre molto attento ai titoli da dare ai miei progetti, anche Urban Melodies e Raindrop Blues hanno avuto bisogno di molto tempo prima di essere scelti come titoli del progetto. Il titolo secondo me è il miglior biglietto da visita per un progetto fotografico. Come dicevo prima il progetto Humans of New York mi ha influenzato molto e per questo stavo contemplando l’idea di chiamare la mia serie Humans of Cinema. Poi alla fine ho scelto Film People per il riferimento ai Book People del libro Fahrenheit 451, dove ogni individuo preserva la memoria di un libro da lui scelto. Non so in quanti abbiano colto questo riferimento, ma a me l’idea piaceva molto, essendo quello di Bradbury uno dei miei libri preferiti.
Why did you call the project Film People?
I am always very careful to the titles to give to my projects, even Urban Melodies and Raindrop Blues took a long time to be chosen. In my opinion, the title is the best business card for a photographic project. As I said before, Humans of New York influenced me a lot and for this reason I was contemplating the idea of calling my series Humans of Cinema. Then, in the end, I chose Film People for the reference to the Book People of Fahrenheit 451, where each individual preserves the memory of a book of his choice. I don’t know how many took this reference, but I liked the idea a lot, Bradbury’s one is among my favorite books.

Come si sta sviluppando il progetto? Hai cambiato qualcosa rispetto all’idea iniziale?
Inizialmente non credevo necessario dover aggiungere il motivo della scelta, ma subito dopo il primo scatto ho capito che il testo sarebbe stato un elemento fondamentale del progetto. Rispetto alle prime foto ho capito meglio quali domande porre per ottenere delle risposte più interessanti, più approfondite. In tal senso la storia migliore che sono riuscito a raccogliere è quella legata alla foto #64, è stato un racconto davvero toccante.
How is the project development? Have you changed anything in relation to the initial idea?
Initially I didn’t think it was necessary to add the reason for the choice, but immediately after the first shot I realized that the text would be a fundamental element of the project. Compared to the first photos I understood better what questions to ask to get more interesting, more in-depth answers. In this sense, the best story I collected is maybe the one related to photo #64, it was a truly touching story.

Tu quale film sceglieresti? Perché non partecipi al tuo progetto?
Ho aspettato molto prima di partecipare ma alla fine, tra le foto che trovate all’interno di questo sito, c’è anche il mio ritratto. Provate a scoprire qual è, non faccio spoiler!
